U.S. stocks closed slightly higher on October 2, with the S&P 500 up 0.19%, the Nasdaq up 0.04%, and the Dow up 0.04%. According to Sina Finance, large-cap technology shares mostly fell, while Nvidia rose more than 1% to its highest closing level since mid-May.

Optical communications and memory chip stocks jumped, with Coherent up more than 10%, Ciena and Lumentum up more than 7%, SK Hynix up more than 5%, Corning up more than 4%, Micron up more than 3%, and SanDisk, Western Digital, and Seagate Technology up more than 2%. Mattel rose nearly 19%, its best single-day performance since February 2019, while Synopsys climbed more than 12% to its highest close since August 27 after reports that it is working with OpenAI on a chip-design AI model.

Most semiconductor stocks also advanced, including ON Semiconductor, Applied Materials, and Marvell Technology. Chinese concept stocks mostly declined, with the Nasdaq Golden Dragon China Index down 1%.

In commodities, Brent crude at one point rose more than 6% intraday and closed up 5.19%, while November WTI crude futures rose 2.71%. COMEX gold futures gained 0.5% and COMEX silver futures rose 1.29%.

According to Sina Finance, citing CCTV News, the Houthis in Yemen said in a statement on the evening of October 1 local time that Saudi Arabia carried out 47 airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas over the previous 24 hours, targeting multiple locations including Taiz Province and Saada Province. Since the escalation on September 3, Saudi Arabia has launched 1,256 airstrikes and missile attacks.
