A U.S. official said the Pentagon may soon send another aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf. According to Sina Finance, the move would give U.S. commanders in the Middle East more options if U.S. President Donald Trump decides to escalate strikes against Iran.
The official said the Theodore Roosevelt left its home port of San Diego on Sunday. Its destination has not been finalized, but the deployment would give U.S. Central Command more options depending on regional conditions.
If the Roosevelt ultimately reaches the Middle East, the number of carrier strike groups in the region would rise back to three, the same level as when the war against Iran began. The Roosevelt carries 5,000 sailors and Marines, along with thousands more service members aboard accompanying ships.
The George H.W. Bush and George Washington carriers will remain in the region. Before the military action against Iran in April, the last time the United States had three carrier strike groups deployed in the Middle East at once was in 2003.
