NEAR Intents announced via a post on the X platform that it was subjected to a security breach that resulted in the loss of $3.8 million in users’ funds. The incident drew widespread attention within the digital assets sector due to its connection to a broader security context involving Bitget.
According to what the platform explained, the incident was caused by a malfunction in the interaction between the deposit and withdrawal infrastructure of Omni and the smart contracts of NEAR Intents. It also confirmed that the contract-side vulnerability has already been fixed to prevent similar attacks from happening again in the future.
NEAR Intents said it will fully compensate affected users for the lost funds. It also stated that the incident was reported to law enforcement authorities, and that the team is working with security partners and blockchain analytics to track the funds and attempt to recover them. The platform added that it will publish a detailed report in the coming days.
In a separate analysis, blockchain researcher ZachXBT said the funds linked to the incident were moved to KuCoin and then transferred via a bridge to Bitcoin. As of the time the news was published, the identity of the entity responsible for the hack had not yet been confirmed.
This attack came after NEAR Intents helped the Bitget platform deal with a major security breach it suffered last week, which totaled $388 million in losses. NEAR Intents said it successfully blocked $50 million and froze more than 500,000 dollars tied to that attack. It also noted that Bitget CEO Gracy Chen suspected that hackers from North Korea were behind the incident.
What should users do?
• Review any unusual activity in wallets or accounts associated with the protocol.
• Keep records of transactions, deposits, and withdrawals in anticipation of any follow-up compensation.
• Rely only on official announcements, especially those related to the compensation plan and the technical report.
• Enable the highest levels of protection available on the accounts and wallets associated.
This incident reflects the ongoing security pressure on cross-chain bridging protocols—especially when the technical infrastructure involves more than one deposit and withdrawal system, making response speed and transparency critical factors in minimizing the impact on users.
