QR-code payments have become the norm across much of Asia—whether you’re buying coffee in Hanoi or groceries in Tokyo.

Binance Pay enables tourists to spend cryptocurrency directly from their Binance balance. Over the past year, the service has integrated this everyday habit by directly connecting to national QR payment systems, so travelers can pay with cryptocurrency just as local people already pay with QR codes, cash, or cards.

This network now also reaches Japan thanks to a new integration with PayPay—one of the country’s most widely used payment platforms. Next, learn how this network was created, what it means to pay like a local, and how Binance Pay will evolve further.

Connecting to national QR payment infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region

From Vietnam’s VietQR system to Japan’s PayPay: Binance Pay integrates with national QR payment infrastructure in major tourist destinations across Asia. All integrations work the same way: you don’t need to download a new app or top up a separate wallet—just scan the merchant’s QR code with Binance Pay at places that travelers already visit.

How the network works

In many countries, there are already their own national or bank-supported QR payment standards—systems that locals use every day to pay for coffee, groceries, or taxis. Instead of building a separate payment network from scratch, Binance Pay directly connects to existing standards. Merchants continue using the QR codes already displayed at their locations. Travelers only need the Binance app and a cryptocurrency balance. No local bank account, new equipment, or a separate wallet is required.

One traveler told us what it looks like in practice on a trip to Vietnam: as a foreign tourist, he didn’t need to exchange currency or carry cash. He simply scanned the QR code with Binance Pay and paid with stablecoins such as USDT or USDC, or other tokens such as BTC, BNB, or ETH. Settlements were made using real-time exchange rates. The merchant received the local currency directly, making the process convenient for both sides.

From July to August 2026, the number of active Binance Pay users among tourists grew by 20%, indicating the demand for convenient crypto payments with conversion to local currency. If you ask them why, the answers are usually the same: small practical conveniences that, together, make traveling significantly easier.

  • One app—multiple countries. The same Binance Pay interface whether you’re in Hanoi or Tokyo.

  • No currency exchange required. Pay with cryptocurrency, and the merchant receives local fiat currency.

  • No gas fees. Real-time currency conversion using current exchange rates.

Japan’s PayPay network joins Binance Pay for tourists

Now this same convenient payment method is also available in Japan—one of Asia’s most visited destinations, where there are millions of merchants across the country that support PayPay.

With this integration, tourists can scan the PayPay merchant’s QR code or present their own payment code for the merchant to scan, and then directly pay for their purchase with cryptocurrency from their Binance account balance. No pre-conversion to JPY is required.

The benefits available across the rest of the network remain the same: a convenient and familiar way to pay, real-time currency conversion at the time of payment, and wide coverage—more than one million PayPay merchants, including convenience stores, restaurants, and other venues.

Imagine this: you land in Tokyo after a long flight. You quickly swing by the neighborhood store for water and snacks—and right at the checkout you see a PayPay QR code. Open Binance Pay, scan the code—done: you don’t have to look for another payment method, handle cash, or deal with conversion.

Note: This PayPay QR-code payment feature is shown and available only to tourists visiting Japan who have completed identity verification on Binance. It is not available to residents of Japan.

How to pay with merchants that accept PayPay

The PayPay QR-code payment feature is built directly into the Binance app, so there’s nothing additional to download or set up.

At checkout, it only takes a few taps—quick and easy, just like paying with a card or using a local wallet app. Here’s how it works:

  1. Open the Binance app and tap the [Pay] icon.

  2. Click the [PayPay] icon.

  3. Present your PayPay payment code: show the code in the Binance app so the merchant can scan it.

  4. Confirm and complete the payment. Your cryptocurrency will automatically convert to JPY at the time of payment.

In some local stores that accept PayPay, you can also scan the merchant’s PayPay QR code and then enter the payment amount to complete the transaction. Detailed step-by-step instructions are available in our guide: How to Pay with Binance Pay at a Merchant Accepting PayPay in Japan During a Trip

What happens next after paying with a QR code

Japan is the latest new destination, but not the last overall.

The next stage for Binance Pay is expanding coverage across the Asia-Pacific region and exploring other regions where QR-code payments have already become part of everyday life and where there is high tourist traffic. Vietnam and Japan are natural choices for exactly those conditions.

The idea is simple: move into markets where people already feel comfortable paying by QR code so that cryptocurrency fits naturally into the payment experience travelers and merchants are used to. A year ago, there was no such network. Today, it covers some of Asia’s most in-demand travel routes.

Paying abroad should be as familiar as paying at home—using a phone that’s always within reach. That’s exactly the system Binance Pay is building, step by step, trip by trip.
