Seeing the SEC say they want to clarify the rules for on-chain fundraising, a lot of friends in the group are asking whether this means things are going to be loosened.

To be honest, after so many years in this space, every time regulators come out to say they’ll make the rules clear, don’t rush to shout that a bull market is coming. Usually, they first set the rules—lay out clearly what can be done and what can’t—something that’s definitely good for the industry in the long run.

The days when you could just casually issue some coin and raise money are also something that should have passed. If people really want to build this industry for the long term, compliance is definitely a hurdle you can’t get around.

My own experience over the years is this: the clearer the regulation is, the more confidence legitimate capital has to come in. In the end, what remains will be projects that actually do things, while so-called “air coins” will be gradually weeded out. For those of us who’ve been in the market for the long term, that’s really a good thing.

Personal view: you don’t have to call it a negative every time you see regulators, and you also don’t have to call it an all-out super bull market just because someone says they’re going to loosen things. Take it one step at a time. Everyone can pay more attention to the specific details once they come out—don’t just get carried away by the headline. What do you think? Chat in the comments.
