According to CNBC, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 947, the No Robo Bosses Act, banning employers in the state from relying solely on artificial intelligence to fire or discipline workers. The law requires a human reviewer to corroborate termination or disciplinary decisions when employers primarily use AI output, and it requires written notice to affected employees that AI was primarily used, along with a description of the data used and a human contact for further explanation. State Senator Jerry McNerney, the bill's author, said AI should remain a tool controlled by humans, while California Federation of Labor Unions President Lorena Gonzalez said workers and unions had changed the national narrative on AI in the workplace. Newsom had vetoed an earlier version of the measure in October before the bill was revised and reintroduced in February.
