81,500~82000 is a critical area!!$BTC

With tonight’s macro data now settled, the price action nonetheless followed a very classic “buy the expectation, sell the fact” script.

【Data breakdown: Looks in line with expectations on the surface, but there’s more beneath the surface】

First, look at the just-released U.S. August PCE data:

  • Core PCE YoY: 3.0% (expected 3.3%, prior revised down to 3.0%)

  • Core PCE MoM: 0.2% (expected 0.3%, prior revised down to 0.1%)

When focusing on core inflation alone, it’s actually broadly below expectations. The moment the data was released, optimistic sentiment about inflation cooling was ignited, and bulls’ enthusiasm surged briefly—gold, silver, and other assets shot up straight.

But why did the market then suddenly reverse course and plunge, triggering a cascade of liquidations?

The reason lies in the “hidden headwinds” behind the data:

  1. Personal spending was extremely strong: August personal spending rose 0.9% month over month (versus 0.8% expected), and the previous figure was revised sharply higher.

  2. Final estimate of second-quarter real consumer spending: 3.8%, well above the 3.4% expected.

This means that although price increases have slowed, U.S. consumers’ willingness and ability to spend remain exceptionally strong. Such robust economic data directly reduces the likelihood that the Fed will cut rates in the near term. The market quickly realized that although inflation is cooling, the economy isn’t landing—so interest rates will have to stay high. Treasury yields rose in turn, and risk assets—including cryptocurrencies—were rapidly sold off, triggering panic-driven liquidations across the market.

【Market recap: Sentiment-driven selloff or trend reversal?】

Let’s return to BTC’s 4-hour chart. Around the time the data was released, prices saw a rapid series of wicks in both directions. They have since pulled back to around 83,000, once again approaching the key support area at 82,500.

A market move like this—“positive data, yet prices plunge”—can be devastating to sentiment. Bulls get blindsided just as they’re feeling extremely optimistic, which can easily trigger a chain reaction of stop-loss orders—in other words, the “cascade” we’ve seen.

【Key question: Is a crash coming before the bull market?】

Many people are asking whether a selloff of this magnitude means the bull market is over, or whether a major crash is coming.

Objectively speaking, it’s too early to call this a “crash before the bull market,” but pressure from a short-term correction is indeed mounting.

  • The medium-term thesis remains intact: the decline in core PCE inflation is real, and the Fed’s rate-hiking cycle is largely nearing its end. The tightest liquidity conditions are behind us, which provides long-term support for the crypto market.

  • What needs to be digested in the short term: strong consumer data has once again pushed back rate-cut expectations. The market needs time to adjust to a “higher for longer” interest-rate environment.

  • Technical warning: Prices remain in a descending channel dating back to the September highs, and have broken below the previous minor support. If the 81,500–82,000 area fails to hold, prices could move lower in search of liquidity, testing 80,000 or even lower levels.

Summary and recommendations:
Don’t let sharp short-term volatility throw you off course. A market move like this—“positive data, but prices plunge”—is often the result of major players using sentiment to shake out weak hands and liquidate leveraged positions.

For traders, the most important thing right now is to manage position sizes: don’t blindly buy the dip, and don’t panic-sell. Keep a close eye on whether 82,000 holds. If the price stabilizes there alongside declining volume, it could be a false breakdown. If it breaks below on rising volume, be patient and wait for the market to form a new base at lower levels, such as around 80,000.

Bull markets are punctuated by sharp selloffs. Until the trend becomes clear, protecting your principal and being patient matter more than gold.
