HSBC has given a name to its Hong Kong dollar stablecoin.
It’s called HSBC RedCoin.
It plans to launch within the year, in phases.
Phase one will only do two things.
Person-to-person transfers, and person-to-merchant payments.
The entry points will connect to PayMe and HSBC Hong Kong mobile banking.
The key isn’t the name—it’s the issuer.
Stablecoins in the past have mostly been issued by crypto companies.
Now a major bank has stepped in itself.
In effect, it pushes on-chain settlement into everyday payments.
The first batch will only cover everyday payments, not investment.
This step first brings users into the bank’s own entry points.
A survey covering over a thousand local customers shows.
74% of respondents already know what stablecoins are used for.
HSBC’s tokenized deposit business covers six markets.
In August, it also ran cross-border transactions end-to-end via the Swift ledger.
For crypto, stablecoins are the most tangible on-chain use case.
As issuance grows, on-chain activity will follow.
Do you think a bank-issued stablecoin will bring in new money? Let’s talk in the comments
