The ECB begins to seriously consider: should a digital euro be used by AI agents?

The central bank says that from January to June next year, it will conduct a round of concept tests, focusing on three areas: AI agent payments, small-value payments, and automated machine-to-machine payments.

At the same time, it is recruiting new participants for the digital euro innovation platform. The directions include electronic receipts, multi-party transactions, payments with conditional automatic execution, and new payment interfaces.

In addition, there is a 12-month pilot involving 36 financial institutions, including Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank, scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027.

However, whether a digital euro can truly be issued depends on two things: relevant EU legislation being passed, and the ECB’s final decision.

What money would AI agents use to make payments? There are currently three options: stablecoin protocols like x402, card network rails, and central bank digital currency.

Among these three paths, which one will be the first to be used at large scale by agents?
