Binance will begin allowing eligible overseas users to pay most merchants that support PayPay with USDT during their visit period, starting from Wednesday.
The transactions run through the cross-payment interoperability framework HIVEX. Merchants will still settle in Japanese yen—merchants do not need to apply separately or enable this feature on their own.
Binance says this is the first crypto payment service to connect to PayPay’s merchant network via HIVEX, and that PayPay covers millions of locations in Japan, including major chains, small and mid-sized retailers, vending machines, taxis, and public transportation.
For stablecoin payments to be truly useful, people first need to forget they’re using stablecoins when they scan a QR code at a convenience store.
