Morgan Stanley announces the establishment of a digital asset lab dedicated to testing stablecoins, tokenization, and DeFi. The scope of testing includes tokenized bank deposits, central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), and tokenized money market funds, with a particular focus on DeFi treasuries. Such treasuries can automatically allocate funds across different DeFi markets according to preset strategies—effectively automating the “manual rebalancing” part of traditional fund management.

The digital assets head, Amy Oldenburg, said that “the treasury becoming part of the future financial system is a very reasonable path, but this technology is still too early-stage. We can’t take the whole platform and risk it.” On paper, she sounds optimistic, but in practice, the approach is to ring-fence it in a separate lab and explicitly prevent it from touching core systems. This combination of publicly upbeat yet extremely cautious execution reflects the real pace at which large institutions handle new technology.

Of course, this lab is not some standalone, major initiative—it is one of more than 270 internal innovation projects that Morgan Stanley evaluates annually. It’s not a separately announced, strategy-level move, so there’s no need to over-interpret the hype.

The timing is also interesting. Half a year ago, Morgan Stanley just launched MSBT, the first self-managed Bitcoin spot ETF among major U.S. banks. Six months later, it pivots to research whether DeFi treasuries can automate fund allocation, while also rolling out retail crypto trading for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana through E*Trade. Looking at these three things together, it’s the same institution moving step by step from “selling a Bitcoin ETF” to “studying how to use DeFi.” The pace isn’t fast, but the direction is very clear.

If DeFi treasuries truly work, what they would replace is the portion of asset management that relies on manual judgment and rebalancing—where managers charge fees. A traditional asset-management giant personally stepping in to research how to automate part of its core business is, in itself, a motivation worth thinking about one level deeper; it’s not as simple as “embracing innovation.”
