Japan’s Financial Services Agency has approved the fourth stablecoin pilot.
There are six participating companies in total.
The two technology partners are TradeWaltz and NTT Data.
The four financial institutions are Mizuho, Mitsubishi UFJ, and Sumitomo Mitsui.
Plus one more: Mitsubishi UFJ Trust.
The three major banks together have total assets of about $6.8 trillion.
It’s not payment for goods.
Rather, it is consideration when export receivables are assigned (sold) to the buyer.
Upload the bill of lading, then the bank approves it, which triggers the stablecoin settlement.
The coin is backed by a yen stablecoin jointly developed by the three major banks.
The commercial target is the fiscal year ending March 2027.
What the Financial Services Agency provides is support, not permission.
The announcement states that the legal interpretation will be published only after the experiment ends.
Now the six companies are already running based on the real structure.
For crypto, this is a step toward stablecoins getting embedded into real-world trade payments.
The narrative is a bit warm, but it’s still a few years away from ordinary people being able to use it.
Do you think stablecoins will land first in trade finance, or first in everyday payments? Let’s discuss in the comments.
