The earnings season is here! Don’t get trapped buying at the short-term surge

The earnings season is officially underway. This phase of the market is most likely to feature the pattern: “when expectations are met, sell off.”

Many stocks have already been bid up on favorable news in advance. Once the earnings are released—regardless of whether the numbers are good—funds often use the opportunity to exit. Those that miss expectations can see a rapid drop.

On top of that, ongoing macro news keeps disrupting the market. The resulting dispersion will be amplified further, with volatility cranked up to the max.

During this period, the biggest taboo is going all-in with a heavy position at once. In the earnings-season game, it’s not about how fast you chase the rally—it’s about the expectation gap. A big jump doesn’t necessarily mean the fundamentals have truly turned around, and a pullback isn’t automatically a bargain-hunting opportunity. Wait until the results are actually in, then act.

In this earnings season, which sector do you think is most likely to surprise us in a bad way?
