The crypto market in September 2026 is full of surprises. While Bitcoin is holding above $80,000 and edging toward $90,000, something many had been waiting for for almost a year is brewing in altcoins—an alt season. But this rally has an important difference from the previous ones: the market has become selective.
Market in numbers: where we are now
The total market capitalization of crypto is holding around $2.86 trillion — 2% higher than a week ago, but 3.7% below the peak values from last Wednesday. Bitcoin is consolidating near $83,000, having tested the lower end of the range after a 40% rise from mid-August lows.
The Fear and Greed Index is at 74 — a zone close to extreme greed. Notably, at the same time the stock market has been in “fear” for 20 days. Cryptocurrencies show resilience even as traditional assets pull back.
What changed: capital is looking for yield, not hype
The main difference in the current cycle is a shift in the logic of capital rotation. If altseason used to be kicked off by a wave of speculation around memecoins, now money is flowing into projects with real revenue and functioning business models.
This is confirmed by the data: Uniswap (UNI) is up more than 110%, Arbitrum (ARB) — by 150%, and NEAR Protocol — by 180% over the last 30 days. At the same time, among the top-20 leaders in growth, only two memecoins made the list.
Bankless analyst David Hoffman noted a common trait among growth leaders: “They make money — they all generate revenue.” This suggests the rally is driven by utility rather than speculation.
Key sectors: where capital is looking
DeFi: the return of the king
DeFi tokens lead the rotation. The DeFi Select index rose 8.7% over the day amid the overall market growth of 2.5%. Uniswap, Arbitrum, and Jupiter (JUP) show steady growth thanks to real trading volumes and fees.
Interestingly, Total2 (the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies except Bitcoin) has attracted more than $371 billion since June 2026, which is a 45% increase. This indicates a systematic shift of capital from BTC into altcoins.
AI tokens: a new narrative force
The AI sector continues to gain momentum. NEAR Protocol, one of the leaders in this space, is showing growth of around 180%. According to Talos, capital is concentrating around income-generating protocols, AI, privacy, and tokenized assets.
RWA and tokenization: steady, quiet growth
The volume of tokenized real-world assets (RWA) reached $34.2 billion, up 85% since the start of the year. This area hasn’t yet caused a lot of excitement among retail traders, but institutional interest is steadily growing.
Technical view: signals of caution
Despite the positive trend, there are also worrying signs. CryptoQuant analysts point to “bearish divergence” on the Total2 index’s RSI: the price is setting new highs, but the RSI isn’t. This is a classic signal of weakening momentum.
In addition, inflows of altcoins to exchanges have reached highs not seen since October 2025. The average weekly number of altcoin deposits on Binance exceeds 22,700 transactions, and on Coinbase — 8,300. Historically, an increase in supply on exchanges comes before corrections.
However, the scale of deposits is still below the levels at the start of the previous bull cycles, leaving room for further growth.
What’s next: scenarios for altseason
The CoinMarketCap altseason index is at 64 out of 100, up from 48 a week earlier. The official altseason threshold is 75. It’s only a little way off.
Bullish scenario: If Bitcoin holds above $82,000 and continues rising toward $90,000+, capital will keep flowing into altcoins. The most likely beneficiaries are DeFi protocols with real revenue and AI projects.
Bearish scenario: If BTC sustains a move below $80,000, it will be a signal that the market isn’t ready to go higher. In that case, altcoins could correct more than Bitcoin due to increased supply on exchanges.
Bottom line
The current altseason is not a repeat of 2021. The market is older, the capital is smarter, and investors are more selective. Memecoins are no longer the only driver: projects with real revenue, working products, and a clear business model are taking the lead.
Watch BTC levels, ETF inflow dynamics, and the activity of “smart money” — whales with balances from 100 to 1,000 BTC, which have increased their reserves by 113,950 BTC since mid-July. Their behavior often precedes market trends.
