Zcash's scaling project Tachyon announced engineering progress on September 28, 2026. Project lead Sean Bowe explained that the team has begun integrating Tachyon's recursive proofs into Zakura Common—Zcash's new shared cryptography stack. The first step was the release of Udon, a Rust crate that replaces parts of the elliptic curve and arithmetic components. CoinDesk reported on this update on September 29. The Zcash project team also clarified that Tachyon is still a proposed network upgrade, and any mainnet activation requires community approval.

This is not “Zcash has reached tens of thousands of transactions per second.” CoinDesk described over 50,000 tx/s as a long-term goal for the development team. The current Udon release only marks the underlying software entering the integration phase, and it does not prove Tachyon's end-to-end throughput, mainnet performance, or typical users' payment latency. The project states that Udon's arithmetic uses variable-time implementations by default; it does not guarantee that execution time or memory accesses are independent of data. Code that must provide side-channel resistance needs to be explicitly marked and take on the corresponding constraints. The official view is that this reflects performance trade-offs in the proving system—not a report of discovered exploitable vulnerabilities. However, it will increase the importance of code review and security verification.

【My analysis】
The value of this update lies in the engineering pathway: recursive proofs need to reuse Zcash's existing curves and proof stack. Migrating to a shared library could reduce duplicate implementations and allow optimizations to benefit multiple ecosystem projects. Potential market transmission first depends on whether privacy transactions become faster, cheaper, and able to pass independent audits—thereby improving wallet experience and real usage. From code release to network upgrade, wallet integration, and transaction growth, there are still multiple hurdles in between. This update itself does not change the $ZEC issuance rules, nor can it explain short-term price fluctuations.

Binance spot ZECUSDT was queried at 20:25 Beijing time on September 29, 2026. Over the rolling 24 hours, the quoteVolume was about 389.6 million USDT, and the price change was about -9.297%. This is data from a single spot trading pair, indicating that trading activity was high and volatility was large within that window; it cannot be concluded that the decline was caused by the Tachyon news, and it does not represent total market trading volume. When observing $ZEC , you should separate engineering progress from short-term market conditions.

For ordinary holders, don't rush to change wallets just because a crate was released, and don't assume that transfer fees and speed have already changed. Wait until wallet providers, node operators, and exchanges publish compatible versions and mainnet upgrade plans before reassessing. Developers and auditors can focus on checking the variable-time call boundaries in Udon, secret data flows, explicit side-channel resistance annotations, and the dependency update process after Common is reused by multiple projects.

Future observations should include code reviews and independent audits for Udon and Common, reproducible benchmark tests, Tachyon's protocol specifications and community governance process, wallet integration, and ongoing usage data for shielded transactions on mainnet. If audits find secret-dependent timing risks that are difficult to isolate, or if performance tests cannot be reproduced, the technical outlook should cool. If the code passes audits, benchmarks can be reproduced on real nodes, and it moves into the public governance and testnet process, then this route can be said to have gradually moved from cryptography code toward a deployable upgrade.
