Coinbase has now received CFTC approval, which effectively adds another piece to the U.S. derivatives puzzle.

Coinbase Clearing LLC has been approved to register as a derivatives clearing organization. It can clear fully collateralized futures, options, and swap products, with a focus on native USDC collateral and 24/7 settlement. The exchange, brokerage, and clearing steps continue to consolidate within its own ecosystem, suggesting it is pushing its “trading platform” toward “financial market infrastructure.”

That said, don’t equate approval directly with a coin price reaction. What’s more worth watching is the speed at which new products are rolled out, whether trading volume can keep up, and whether the regulatory boundaries will continue to be relaxed. If compliant derivatives keep landing in the future, institutional trading stickiness and USDC usage scenarios may be more likely to be amplified. Would you rather see Coinbase first drive the COIN narrative, or first strengthen USDC’s settlement presence?
