Meta poached MongoDB’s CEO, and MongoDB’s stock price fell by about 20% in a day.

On 9/28, CEO CJ Desai announced that he would step down immediately to become Meta’s Chief Enterprise Platform Officer, reporting directly to Zuckerberg.

He had been CEO of MongoDB for less than a year.

The former CEO, Dev Ittycheria, returned as interim CEO, and the company also reiterated its guidance for both the third quarter and the full year.

The timing is awkward: on 9/29 US time is MongoDB’s Investor Day, where the plan was to discuss its long-term strategy and AI roadmap.

What Desai is expected to build at Meta is a new enterprise platform, focused on AI agents and developer tools.

As big AI companies compete for talent—and are now recruiting public company CEOs instead of just researchers—will this become a new risk factor for software stocks?
