Google starts testing by handing entire phone calls over to AI to make.
The feature is called Call for Me. Gemini will call a merchant for you—check whether an item is in stock, book a restaurant, change an appointment, or ask the store to hold the item for you.
It will introduce itself, follow a voice menu, and even wait in line for a human representative.
But there are still many limitations right now: it’s only available to U.S. Pixel 11 users, requires a paid subscription to Gemini, uses your own phone number to place the call, includes real-time text transcripts throughout, and you can take over at any time.
Previously, Ask for Me could only answer questions, and Hold for Me could only wait for you. This time, the whole phone call is turned over to AI.
The agent has moved beyond the browser and into the phone network. The first things to change will likely be restaurants and customer-service front desks. And once merchants also switch to having AI answer the phone, it’ll be two AIs chatting with each other.
When these capabilities roll out, which type of customer service calls will be replaced first?
