An investigation by the US Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations indicates that the Tether stablecoin USDT may have become one of the main payment instruments used by the Iranian regime to evade US sanctions.
According to the report, about 84% of more than 800 crypto wallets sanctioned for ties to Iran primarily or exclusively used USDT. The identified wallets operated mainly on the Tron and Ethereum networks.
The Senate also raised questions about Tether’s compliance mechanisms and the use of USDT in transactions related to organizations considered terrorist by the US, including Hezbollah.
