Gold falls below $4,200 as oil and expectations of interest-rate hikes by the Federal Reserve weigh on the precious metal.

Gold prices fell more than 3% on Monday, extending losses after a sharp weekly drop, as high oil prices, rising U.S. Treasury bond yields, and expectations of additional interest-rate hikes by the Federal Reserve kept pressure on the precious metal.

XAU/USD dropped 3.3% to $4,146.12 per ounce, while gold futures fell 3.3% to $4,178.05. XAG/USD fell 5.12% to $61.02, while XPT/USD declined 3.2% to $1,725.01. The U.S. dollar index rose 0.1% to 101.09.

Oil prices rose after Iran announced it would not ease its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, keeping uncertainty around a key route for global energy supply.

U.S. President Donald Trump had rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the strait within seven days, although he said he expects negotiations with Tehran to resume this week.
