BURKINA FASO INAUGURATES ITS FIRST NATIONAL GOLD REFINERY
Burkina Faso is inaugurating RAFFINOR-BF, the country’s first national gold refinery, in Ouagadougou. The facility is designed to process up to 400 kilograms of gold per day, or about 150 tonnes annually, with gold refined to a reported purity of up to 99.99%.
The refinery includes an analysis laboratory, foundry, secure storage facilities and a jewellery workshop, and will also house the headquarters of the National Precious Substances Company (SONASP). The project was launched in 2023, when President Ibrahim Traoré laid its foundation stone.
The authorities say the goal is to process more of Burkina Faso’s gold locally and retain a greater share of the value within the country, rather than sending the raw material abroad for refining. The inauguration marks another step in Burkina Faso’s push to expand local processing of its mineral resources.
