A game about breeding cartoon cats slowed down all of Ethereum in December 2017.

CryptoKitties let users buy, breed, and trade unique digital cats as NFTs, before most people had even heard that word. Demand exploded so fast that pending transactions backed up across the network, and gas fees spiked for everyone.

Some of these cats sold for over $100,000 apiece. Meanwhile, ordinary ETH transfers that used to cost pennies were suddenly competing for block space with cartoon cats.

Ethereum survived, obviously, but the incident became one of the earliest public proofs that a single popular app could bring a major blockchain to a crawl.

ETH is at $2,648 today, on a network that's been rebuilt more than once partly because of moments like this one.

Did you ever try to mint or trade anything during a gas spike like that?
