During the rate-hike cycle, BTC rose against the trend by 30,000 dollars—so is this “spring,” or just a “last flare-up”? 🔥

It was struggling around 58,000 in June, peaked at 87,300 on Sept. 21, and now it’s hovering around 84,000.

What’s weird is—this rally is happening against the backdrop of the Federal Reserve’s rate hikes.

On Sept. 16, the Fed raised rates by 25bp to 3.75%–4.00%. CME data shows the probability of another 25bp hike in October has already reached 64.8%. According to the old script, tighter liquidity = risk assets get hit. But somehow BTC is up nearly $30,000.

So here’s the question: who’s buying in this surge?

🧊 Liquidity: the “throttle” for ETFs is actually easing

Many people only see the headline number: “This month’s spot ETF net inflows of $2.7 billion.” But once you break it down, it’s a completely different story:

  • Single-day inflows on 9/21: $999 million

  • 9/22 → $715 million

  • 9/23 → $347 million

  • 9/24 → only $191 million left

In three days, it shrank by 81%.

Put into plain language: the batch of money that lit the fuse is already pulling out. What’s holding up the price now is existing capital and sentiment—not fresh money.

🧱 Positioning: there’s a $68 billion worth of breakeven/locked-in selling pressure hanging overhead

There’s a crucial number in on-chain data: the cost basis of about 880,000 BTC is concentrated around $80,000, within a narrow band of just $2,800. Its value is about $68 billion.

Also:

  • The true market mean (average market cost) is about 76,700.

  • The average holding cost for listed companies’ treasuries is about 80,500.

  • BTC has already broken above the 50-week moving average.

This means the current price is exactly stuck in the spot of “institutions aren’t losing, while retail is near breakeven.” As it moves up, each step is chewing through selling pressure.

🌍 Macro: the real counterpart is Treasury yields

Don’t just focus on the rate hikes themselves—the real drag comes from long-end yields:

  • The 10-year US Treasury yield once broke above 5.2%, the highest since 2007.

  • The 30-year yield once touched 5.444%, the highest since 2004.

  • Brent crude has been bouncing repeatedly between $98 and $105, but the negotiations for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz are still not settled.

BTC doesn’t pay interest. When the risk-free rate rises above 5%+, the opportunity cost of holding BTC is pushed up in a very real way.

Here’s a data point that slaps down those “debt-fear driven” theories: the 90-day rolling correlation between BTC and the 10-year US Treasury yield is only -0.017—almost zero. On the day Sept. 23 when yields broke 5%, BTC actually fell below 85,000.

Macroeconomic narratives can provide emotional anchors, but they can’t determine how far the market will move.

🎯 My take: a structural move, not a full-blown altcoin season

The altcoin season index rose from 38 a month ago to 56, hitting a three-month high—but don’t rush to shout “Altcoin season is here”:

  • BTC’s market share is still high at 57%–59%

  • Rising are the sectors with clear logic: asset tokenization on-chain (HYPE / UNI / ONDO / AVAX), AI tokens, and privacy coins

  • Not the “everyone gets swept up” situation like in 2021.

This round is “narrative-driven selective rotation,” not a broad-based rally. Choose the wrong sector and your position won’t move just because the overall market is up.

📌 Next, watch three signals

  1. $82,000 / $83,000 — the level the bulls must break effectively; if it can’t hold, it’s just range-bound consolidation

  2. $75,000 — if it breaks, it likely probes down to 70,000 and triggers a larger wave of liquidations

  3. Inflation data on Sept. 30 — this is the key variable for determining the rate-hike path in October, and it also decides whether this rebound can be kept alive

One more reminder: 24-hour liquidation has dropped to $228 million, down 63% month-over-month, yet open positions are still at $153 billion. Leverage hasn’t disappeared—it’s just temporarily quiet. In this kind of structure, one geopolitical “black swan” can turn “quiet” into “stampede.”

💬 Finally

Many people ask me whether they should get on board now. My answer is always the same:

In a dense liquidity zone like around 80,000, the odds of getting direction right are far lower than the odds of managing your position. You can’t control where BTC goes tomorrow, but you can control the probability that you get swept out of the market.
