SK Hynix reportedly has started groundwork for a semiconductor plant in Japan’s northeast
According to a report by South Korea’s “SME News” on September 28, industry sources say that SK Hynix has kicked off the basic engineering required for establishing a semiconductor factory in Japan’s northeastern region. A related source said it is still unclear whether the project will be an independent factory or a joint venture factory with Kioxia, but local work is already underway on groundworks, and SK Hynix has also asked parts and component suppliers in South Korea to expand their supply. The report notes that as of a month ago, SK Hynix’s position on building a memory semiconductor factory in Japan was still “under review,” adding that “there are no specific decisions yet.” In response to this news, SK Hynix said that the memory semiconductor factory in Japan is still in the research stage and that there is nothing further to advance at this time. The report also mentioned that SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won said in August this year that SK Hynix is studying a joint-venture memory semiconductor factory in Japan, and that the northeast region was subsequently seen as a strong candidate. Semiconductor and materials component companies such as Kioxia’s Kitakami plant, Japan Semiconductor, Amkor Technology, Denso, and Tokyo Electron have already clustered in Japan’s northeast, including in Iwate Prefecture.
