Hester Peirce leaves the SEC on October 2. A long-expected departure, but the timeline is now official.
Facts (CoinDesk 25/09, Cointelegraph 26/09):
• Resignation letter published Friday on X, last day October 2
• ~8 years in office, including leading the Crypto Task Force since February 4, 2025
• Industry nickname: “Crypto Mom”, advocating for regulation by rules rather than enforcement
• After 10/2: two-member commission (Atkins + Uyeda). No successor named so far
• Next step: associate professorship at Regent University School of Law starting in November
• Same window: the SEC also released crypto FAQs (marketing, staking receipt tokens). A separate matter from the personal departure
Interpretation: not an immediate spot catalyst (BTC is still consolidating around 84k, OKX funding is calm). This is a governance change. The Task Force and the FAQs continue, but the most consistent public voice from the crypto side at the commission is stepping away, with a seat still vacant.
Scenarios:
1) Rapid nomination + Task Force continuity → little visible regulatory friction
2) Seat vacant for a long time + only 2 commissioners → quorum is OK, but less internal debate and more uncertainty about what comes next in the rules
Do you expect more continuity with Atkins/Uyeda, or is it all about Peirce’s successor timing?
