Block announced on September 24 that it has integrated the Bitcoin Lightning Network into the x402 payment standard. According to Odaily, the x402 protocol can verify payment requests after a server returns an HTTP 402 response and unlock data through Lightning invoices and payment preimages.

Steve Lee, head of Block's open-source Bitcoin development unit Spiral, said the integration is aimed at instant, low-cost micropayments. Block has not disclosed a timeline for bringing the standard to Cash App, Square, or Bitkey, and the Python implementation still needs testing on a real node.
