# South Korea Investment Phishing Case

Fake accounts impersonating the former head of a South Korean bank, Hyun-sung Shin, were used to lure people from South Korean social networks into illegal stock-picking groups, the Financial Supervisory Service of Korea has disclosed. In the first quarter of 2026, there were 6,769 phishing-related investment fraud cases of this kind, with losses totaling 181.7 billion won.

The impersonated targets are credible financial figures. The scam is not selling coins—it’s selling trust. For people running communities, what you should watch is whether anyone in your group is using “celebrity interpretations” as endorsement to recruit others. After such accounts are banned, they often move to Telegram and continue operating.

Assessment: As long as celebrity endorsements remain the main channel for attracting victims, impersonation accounts will continue to appear under new names and will not disappear in the short term due to takedowns.
