On September 25, CoinMarketCap (CMC) announced that it has completed its acquisition of the crypto derivatives data platform Coinglass. The transaction consideration was not disclosed. Coinglass was founded in 2019 and covers about 28 exchanges and more than 2,500 contract products. It provides data such as open interest, funding rates, liquidations, and options. It has more than 5 million monthly active users and over 10,000 API clients. CMC claims it has about 115 million monthly active users. Both sides said that derivatives have become a major part of crypto trading volume, and after the acquisition, it will bring together the distribution of positions, liquidation hotspots, and changes in funding rates. Next to the spot prices and market-cap rankings that users already view, it will reduce the need to keep switching back and forth among multiple data sites.

Coinglass said it will continue to operate under an independent brand. The website, app, free tools, API, and pricing will not change for now, and the team will continue to maintain the existing products. CMC CEO Rush said the goal is to share this position-focused perspective with more people, rather than changing Coinglass itself. Binance acquired CMC in April 2020, at which time it said the platform would remain independently operated and that it would not affect the ranking methodology. There has been discussion outside the industry about data concentration, but no official integration timeline has been released. The acquisition amount and the pace of subsequent product rollouts still need to be observed. Existing users can continue to use Coinglass through the original channels.
