XMR Deposits/Withdrawals Hit Exchange Maintenance|Not Proof of a Full-Internet Outage|Around 557 I’ll check the channel first, then the price
My attitude is cautious observation. I won’t label a single exchange’s wallet maintenance as evidence that something went wrong with the Monero chain, and I also won’t treat “will resume later” as already having resumed. In KuCoin’s official announcement on September 23, it states that due to necessary wallet maintenance, XMR deposits and withdrawals will be temporarily closed starting from 01:00 UTC on September 24, and will be restored after the maintenance is completed. The announcement does not provide a specific resumption time, nor does it say that XMR trading is paused. When I wrote this, on the announcement page and the announcement list, I couldn’t find any follow-up notice that could confirm it had already been restored. Whether deposits and withdrawals actually work still depends on the real-time status in the account. The source is KuCoin’s official announcement, not a community screenshot. Also, the Monero project’s public code repository cannot be used to prove whether an exchange’s internal wallet has been fixed.
Why do I care about this? XMR’s privacy features do not exempt centralized exchanges from operational risks. When deposit and withdrawal channels are restricted, the same platform’s spot trading may still function, but cross-platform “brick-and-mortar” transfers, spot settlement, and self-custody withdrawals will be affected. Even the in-platform and out-of-platform quotes may temporarily lose the smooth arbitrage constraints. This is a liquidity and custody-channel issue; it doesn’t automatically equal a chain consensus failure, and you can’t use it to infer that an exchange is insolvent. If someone uses the maintenance notice to shout “the whole network is down” or “it will surge right away,” I’ll first ask for independent evidence.
The market’s actual reaction cannot be based on a single emotional judgment. When I wrote this, Kraken’s public XMR/USD quote was about $557.77. Over the past 24 hours, the high was 575 and the low was 545.52; the current price is close to the 24-hour open of 557.51. That means the price has nearly a $30 swing within this window, but it’s currently near the starting point. You can’t attribute the entire range of movement to KuCoin maintenance, and you also can’t write it as already having broken out. My observation levels are the day’s low near 545.5 and the day’s high near 575. Only if it holds above 575 do I find the short-term buy pressure more convincing. If it breaks below 545.5, it means the premise I’m waiting for to stabilize has been invalidated. Those two numbers are just Kraken’s reference for the last 24 hours—not universal support/resistance across the entire market.
If it were my own trade, I wouldn’t participate right now. The plan is to wait for confirmation and then take a light spot position in the direction of the trend, avoiding high leverage. Only if KuCoin’s account side clearly confirms that XMR deposits and withdrawals have resumed, and if Kraken’s price is above 575 and can hold that level during a pullback, would I consider using about 1% of total funds to try a long. The first target is 590. Near the target, I would cut half; the remaining position would look toward 605. If after entering the trade the price falls below 565, I’ll place a stop-loss. If deposits/withdrawals are restricted again, the quote gaps, or liquidity visibly thins, I will close the position proactively even if the stop-loss hasn’t been hit. If price first breaks below 545.5, I cancel this long setup, re-check the announcements and market depth, and I won’t average down just because it fell a lot. No trigger means no trade—so there’s no profit to speak of.
