I can’t believe it. Teacher Liu Huan has passed away, at just 63.
This morning I saw the obituary posted by the University of International Business and Economics. I stared at it for a long time. At 9:52 a.m. on September 25th, in Shanghai, he passed with his family by his side. What happened yesterday was only officially announced today—so suddenly.
In our generation’s memories, it’s all his voice. When “Song of the Good Heroes” plays, every boy in the class shouts along: “The great river flows east”; “Starting Over” is a必-choose song for my parents at KTV; and during the 2008 Olympic opening ceremony, “Me and You,” everyone across the country hummed it through an entire summer. Later, he returned to teach at the school—teaching from 1991 until his retirement in 2023. Thirty years passed just like that.
The obituary says that, according to his wishes before he passed, the funeral will be simple: no farewell ceremony and no memorial service. When he left, it was quiet and peaceful—just like the kind of person he was.
63 is an age that should have been for enjoying life. Teacher Liu, rest in peace.
