About $18.1 billion worth of Bitcoin and Ethereum quarterly options expire today in a concentrated manner, setting the biggest quarterly expiration record in history. Of that, the Bitcoin portion has a notional value of roughly $15.9 billion, with a put-to-call open interest ratio of about 0.69, leaning toward the bullish side overall. The largest “pin point” is around $75,000, far below the current price; the traditional pin-point gravity played almost no role in this round.
In the same period, Bitcoin futures also completed the September settlement, and the derivatives market saw a concentrated contract unwind. Before expiration, Bitcoin traded back and forth in the $82,000–$85,000 range. It is now quoted at about $83.8k and has held above $83k.
On the spot side, liquidity conditions still look relatively steady. In recent days, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs have continued to record net inflows, which has helped support the price action after deleveraging. With the quarterly expiration washing out a large number of open contracts all at once, one source of short-term volatility has been removed—but the direction is not determined by expiration itself. What truly drives price is the subsequent macro environment and capital flows.
Whether the $83k line can hold is more important to watch than the expiration itself.
