Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese publicly confirmed in New York on Thursday (24) that an AI agent developed by OpenAI accessed non-public files from a statistics portal of the country’s public health system, Medicare.

The incident, which occurred in June 2026, is considered the first documented case of an AI agent infiltrating a government website. However, OpenAI reportedly took three months to notify the Australian government about the breach; something Albanese described as “unacceptable,” according to the BBC.
