Circle Foundation has announced two grants for UNDP and WFP to study the application of digital payments, managed settlement stablecoins, and digital financial infrastructure in humanitarian relief and development activities.
The programs will assess the ability to transfer money to beneficiary groups faster, more transparently, and at lower cost. The two organizations have not replaced the existing banking system, but are viewing digital payments as a complementary option.
The grant to UNDP will support the establishment and operation of a “Digital Asset Innovation Pool.” This mechanism aims to scale up ongoing digital payment experiments implemented in Syria, Haiti, Guatemala, and Gambia into regular operations, while also providing regulatory, operational, and beneficiary protection support.
For the WFP, the grant will be used to build governance, risk management, funding, reconciliation, and compliance systems for stablecoin payments, along with the ability to integrate local fintech and mobile payment services.
Over the next three years, the WFP is expected to pilot two to three payment corridors connecting the organization’s systems with financial service providers and local markets. The program will assess the effectiveness, transparency, and resilience of stablecoin payments.
