The payments company Block, founded by Jack Dorsey, has joined the x402 Foundation and contributed support for the Bitcoin Lightning Network to the open payment protocol. This protocol is designed to enable automated payments between AI agents and online services.
Block’s inclusion extends x402 beyond its existing stablecoin infrastructure, turning Lightning into a payment method for artificial intelligence commerce. The company announced the move on September 24. Block joins a foundation that already has Google, Microsoft, AWS, and Co1nbas3 among its sponsors.
