We bought a “hardware” wallet—and still lost XRP
From September 15 to 20, D’CENT wallets withdrew 11.75 million XRP from 6,678 wallets—about $19 million. One person lost more than $100,000.
People are posting “they hacked hardware wallets,” but that’s not true: the loophole is in the D’CENT mobile app. The “flash drive” itself is intact—if you’ve never entered its seed phrase into the app. Anyone who entered it “for convenience” is also at risk. How the keys leaked is something the company still hasn’t explained. Their advice is to move everything to a wallet with a NEW seed phrase and throw away the old one.
Why this gets to me: I’ve already lost money because I gave access to my account to a “copy trader.” It turned out to be a scammer. Same lesson: whoever has the keys or access is the owner of the money. Not you.
My rules now: the seed phrase only on paper—no screenshots or notes on your phone, and no account access for other people.
