According to CNBC, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung used a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday to revisit wartime operational control, or OPCON, over combined forces on the Korean Peninsula. The 30-minute summit also covered strategic investment, shipbuilding and nuclear cooperation, while the renewed focus on OPCON followed Trump’s decision last month to curtail the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise.

Under the current arrangement, South Korea controls its forces in peacetime, but designated units come under the U.S.-led Combined Forces Command in wartime. Lee’s government and supporters of the transition say reclaiming wartime OPCON would give Seoul greater military autonomy, while experts cited in the report said South Korea is still not fully ready and that critical gaps remain in high-altitude strategic C4ISR and theater missile defense against nuclear threats.
