Uber CEO: Others may be smarter than me, but they can’t outwork me

What’s the most important skill in life? The answer from this executive—who used to be a banker and now runs Uber—is: hard work. And it’s not something you can just decide on and instantly obtain—it requires practice.

This interview makes three points clear:

• The gap between top athletes and ordinary ones isn’t talent—talent is world-class across the board. The difference is self-discipline, a systematic approach, and leaving nothing to chance. Look at Cristiano Ronaldo. Look at Jordan.
• “Others may be smarter and more gifted, but if they try to outwork me—no way.” It’s an advantage that compounds over time, so he wants Uber to become an intensely hard-charging company.
• But “hard-charging” doesn’t mean having no flexibility: from 6 to 8 p.m., it’s fixed—always with the family for dinner. At 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., he still replies to emails.

In the end, the host asked one more question: There must be a price, right? His answer was straightforward: Of course there are trade-offs—life is made of trade-offs.
