Solana is going to cut the time of “confirming a transaction” from 12.8 seconds to 0.15 seconds

Solana’s core upgrade, Alpenglow, is heading to the public testnet. The change is pretty straightforward: replace the TowerBFT consensus that’s been used for years with a new Votor voting mechanism, bringing the transaction finality time down from the current ~12.8 seconds to around 150 milliseconds.

In plain terms, it’s about getting “transfer confirmed and funds received” from a dozen seconds down to a blink. Ordinary users might not notice, but for market making, high-frequency trading, and on-chain payments—this is the line between whether it’s usable or not.

I personally have always been cautious about this kind of “speed-up.” Solana’s hallmark has never been the steadiest—it’s been the fastest. This time, it pushes “fast” one more step forward. But a testnet isn’t the mainnet; there’s still the migration phase in between. For “fast” as a selling point, the final proof is whether the mainnet can deliver without issues 😐

So I want to ask: in the second half of public chain competition, is “faster” still a pitch that can truly move people?
