Helicon has already gone live, but the four Chinese characters “automatic renewal” can easily be heard as “automatic claim/reward pickup.” What’s missing is the step where validators have to pass the verification run.

Avalanche’s official announcement confirms that after the September 22 upgrade, eligible validators can automatically renew according to the cycle and automatically restake rewards based on their configuration; delegated staking will not be renewed automatically. In the same period, the newly started validation cycle must reach a 90% online rate to earn rewards, and the previous cycle is not retroactively counted. If the requirement isn’t met that time, the rewards for the current cycle will be lost, and validators will also exit automatic renewal.

So this time, changing $AVAX is about the operational procedures and constraints for validator operations: having to manually restart one fewer time does not mean having one fewer availability evaluation. Going forward, only if P-chain records show that automatic renewal is truly widely adopted and restart gaps decrease—while there are no additional validator exits caused by insufficient online rates—can we say that this design genuinely reduces operational friction.
