According to HKET, RTHK and Reuters, Asian equities were mixed at midday Thursday as investors focused on the Xi-Trump summit and news that Washington and Beijing agreed to extend their trade truce to January 10.
Tokyo's Nikkei 225 extended gains, trading at 65,681.87 as of 04:32 UTC, up 662.92 points or 1.02%, as chip-related shares advanced, with Tokyo Electron up 2.01% and Advantest up 3.24%.
Seoul's KOSPI rose, led by memory-chip names, at 7,080.92 as of 04:32 UTC, up 63.01 points or 0.90%, with Samsung Electronics gaining 3.25% and SK Hynix adding 1.20%.
Hong Kong stocks fell further as investors awaited the summit, with the Hang Seng Index down 129 points at the midday break to 24,704.75 on turnover of HK$82.18 billion, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell 1.1% to 4,330. Alibaba bucked the trend to rise 0.3%, Lenovo fell more than 3%, CATL declined 4% and Zhipu dropped more than 4%; Tencent was down 1.54% and Meituan off 0.96% as of 04:32 UTC.
Taiwan's TAIEX weakened, at 47,897.45 as of 04:32 UTC, down 259.84 points or 0.54%, with TSMC off 0.80%, MediaTek up 0.96% and Hon Hai down 2.15%.
In mainland China, stocks opened lower and slipped, with the Shanghai Composite at 3,900.00, down 0.93%, as of 04:32 UTC; the Shenzhen Component fell 1.74% to 13,399.34 and the CSI 300 declined 1.29% to 4,459.15.
