South Korean President Lee Jae-myung on Wednesday unveiled an ambitious plan to double the country's semiconductor capacity and shield AI supply chains from external shocks. According to Sina Finance, he also called on the United States to increase investment in South Korea.

Lee made the remarks at the Korea Investment Summit in New York, which brought together financial and business leaders from South Korea and the United States to promote U.S. investment in South Korea. He said South Korea would expand chip production centers to double semiconductor output over the next five years, and he cited the country's three major super projects launched earlier this year to build chip clusters and other AI facilities.

He also said South Korea would build key AI supply chains so they are not affected by any shocks. Lee added that the government is reinvesting the gains from the AI chip boom through a future fund designed to nurture related industrial infrastructure and talent.

Lee said South Korea is working to create a market environment favorable to global capital and is pushing market reforms to attract foreign investment. He said the government has begun revising laws to enhance shareholder value and plans to expand the foreign exchange market to enable round-the-clock trading.

In comments on his summit meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump the previous day, Lee said the two sides discussed cooperation in shipbuilding, especially the construction of U.S. military vessels.
