Hong Kong Banker Jailed After Taking $470K in Crypto Bribes.

Former China Construction Bank (Asia) customer relationship manager Lam Chun-yin has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to accepting more than $470,000 in Tether (USDT) to falsely authenticate financial documents worth over $1.6 billion.

The scheme took place between April and June 2022. Lam helped authenticate fake standby letters of credit that appeared to have been issued by CCB, despite not being authorized to handle commercial credit facilities or letters of credit. The documents were connected to transactions involving fintech firm Vesttoo.

The fraud was eventually uncovered through an internal investigation by CCB (Asia), which found that neither the bank nor its related entities had issued the documents. Lam was also ordered to repay about HK$3.7 million, roughly matching the value of the bribes.

Hong Kong’s ICAC has obtained arrest warrants for other people allegedly linked to the scheme. The case also highlights how cryptocurrencies such as USDT can be used to transfer illicit payments, while remaining traceable through blockchain transactions during financial investigations.
