The number 30 trillion is back—but the way it came back is different from last time.

On September 22, total crypto market capitalization returned above 30 trillion for the first time since January this year. Over the past roughly three months, the entire market added more than $740 billion. It sounds like a broad rally—but when you break it down, it isn’t.

First, look at concentration. Bitcoin’s dominance is about 59.2% (based on total market cap including stablecoins). If you exclude stablecoins and only look at the top 100 assets, the figure rises to 66.6%. Even more extreme: seven assets—so-called the “Crypto Seven”—account for 92.1% of the top 100’s total market cap. In other words, the index is back, but the vast majority of coins haven’t come back.

Next, the time dimension. Glassnode data shows that over the past two years, Bitcoin is up about 28%, while the median return for mid-cap tokens is down 74%, and Ethereum is basically flat. What does that mean? Over two years, $BTC is positive; $ETH is flat—while mid-to-lower tier altcoins have effectively been cut in half and then cut again. When people say “market cap has returned to 30 trillion,” the truth is that the overall figure has been pulled back to its prior level by the size of a small number of assets.

This also explains why the funding structure in this cycle is different from the last one: institutional money is flowing through the spot ETF channel, and spot ETFs only cover Bitcoin and Ethereum. For altcoins, the main driver has been derivative leverage—not spot buying.

My view is that this 30 trillion is a “narrow” 30 trillion. It looks more like a repair driven by rising concentration rather than the start of a full-scale bull market. Judging market temperature by total market cap will keep distorting the picture in 2026. What matters isn’t total market cap—it’s dominance and where the money flows.

So here’s the question: have the coins you hold outperformed $BTC over the past two years? Or did only the index come back?
