BlackRock made a pretty direct judgment this time: AI agents in the future may use stablecoins themselves to buy compute power and data. This isn’t just another attempt to link AI and Crypto again; more importantly, it places “payments” much closer to the opportunity than people might expect. And that’s actually important.

Because when many people see AI, compute, and data markets, they tend to jump straight to far-off narratives. But BlackRock’s pacing is different: the compute capacity market is still in its early stages, whereas payments are more likely to be implemented first.

In other words, in the short term, what’s worth watching isn’t whether someone can tell a grand story all at once, but who can first take up machine-to-machine, small, automated settlement. From a market perspective, this is an incremental discussion for the stablecoin direction, but it still can’t be directly equated with large-scale demand forming immediately.

Right now, it’s more like institutions are starting to treat “AI agent autonomous payments” as a realistic use case rather than just a concept. What comes next is whether this direction can move from conceptual discussion to more concrete products and payment flows.
