Solana is testing an update that could cut finalization to 150 ms ⚡️
Solana has started testing Alpenglow on a public testnet. The update should reduce the transaction finalization time from about 12.8 seconds to 150 ms.
Finalization is the point at which a transaction is considered definitively confirmed and can no longer be reverted. Currently, exchanges, bridges, and other services have to wait for it to complete, and after the update, this process could take fractions of a second.
Alpenglow replaces the current TowerBFT consensus mechanism with a new protocol called Votor. Validators will be able to reach agreement in one or two rounds of voting, which should significantly speed up finalization.
At the same time, this is still strictly a test—150 ms is a target metric rather than an already achieved result. The date for a full rollout of the update on the mainnet has not yet been confirmed.
