The European Banking Authority (EBA), the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA), and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) have jointly issued an update on common risks, stating that advances in quantum computing could weaken the cryptographic systems that secure transactions, communications, and blockchain databases. Researchers in quantum artificial intelligence at Google estimated in March that the number of physical qubits required to break the cryptographic techniques used in many cryptos could be about 20 times less than earlier estimates. At present, no computer is capable of carrying out such an attack. In February, Bitcoin developer Jameson Lopp and others proposed phasing out the current signature scheme and limiting the use of unspent funds 5 years after the Proposal is activated; this Proposal has not yet been approved. The Ethereum Foundation plans to make the Ethereum execution, consensus, and data layers resistant to quantum attacks by December 2029.
