By the end of this year, Hong Kong CMU plans to move settlement onto the blockchain—this is more substantive than “yet another concept.”
According to PANews, citing Zhicheng Finance, Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) Chief Executive Eddie Yue said in his speech at the Treasury Markets Summit that the Central Moneymarkets Unit (CMU) will roll out new services by year-end. At that time, it will provide on-chain 24/7, real-time settlement, supporting the digital Hong Kong dollar and the central bank’s digital currency (CBDC). It will also explore settling tokenized deposits and regulated stablecoins on the platform.
The key takeaways are clear: on one side is traditional bond settlement infrastructure, and on the other is on-chain payment tooling. If such integration advances smoothly, institutions’ acceptance of settlement for tokenized assets and stablecoins may be higher. Another observation is that the narratives around Hong Kong’s digital finance, RWA, and regulated stablecoins will likely continue to be discussed repeatedly in the market.
Which are you more interested in: its impact on Hong Kong’s digital finance ecosystem, or the boost it gives to RWA and regulated stablecoin narratives?
