Legend of the Shitcoin Dog

At 3:30 a.m., Awie's phone screen lit up, casting a reddish glow across his face.

He stared at MUBARAK on the Binance square. Within 24 hours, its price had surged from 0.00468 to 0.08119, an increase of over 72%. The group chat was already in an uproar. Someone posted a screenshot showing it had jumped five times. Someone else was shouting that they should keep charging. And then people started calculating how much money they’d make if it ever reached one dollar.

Awie's hands were trembling.

Three days ago, he was still hesitating. Back then, MUBARAK was just 0.03 dollars. He asked in the group whether this coin had any prospects, and was immediately mocked by a bunch of people. Some said you had to look at the fundamentals for a shitcoin. Others said, “If you don’t dare to buy, don’t talk so much.”

Awie gritted his teeth and used 2,000 yuan to buy more than 6,000 MUBARAK.

After buying, he regretted it.

On the first day, it dropped by 15%. Awie stared at the floating loss for the whole night and couldn’t sleep. On the second day, it fell another 8%. He started to wonder if he’d been cut again. The group chat became much quieter, and the people who used to call trades stopped speaking. Awie almost sold and exited at around 0.025.

It was a single sentence from his wife that made him stay. She said, “You already bought it. Just treat it as losing that 2,000. Don’t keep watching every day.”

Awie uninstalled the Binance app.

Today, he was woken up by a barrage of messages from the group. When he checked, MUBARAK had nearly tripled from the price he bought at. The 2,000 yuan was now close to 6,000. He was so excited his palms were sweating. He quickly reinstalled the app, watching that bouncing number, his heartbeat racing like it might jump out of his chest.

Sell or not sell?

Two camps in the group were arguing nonstop. One side said, “Run now—shitcoins pump fast and dump even faster.” The other side said, “This is nowhere near it yet. MUBARAK has a community and hype. The target price is 0.5 dollars.” Awie looked at the candlestick chart. The peak above 0.0 had already come down a bit, and the current price was 0.08119.

He remembered what happened when he bought NIL last month. Back then, NIL rose from 0.0067 to 0.0107. He didn’t sell, and overnight it dropped right back to where it started. In the end, he cut his loss and got out while down 40%. That lesson made him understand one thing: the profits from a shitcoin are just paper wealth—if it’s not in your hands, it’s not yours.

Awie took a deep breath and placed a limit sell order at 0.085.

Five minutes later, it filled. He sold 512 USDT out of more than 6,300 MUBARAK.

He watched the numbers that appeared in his account and let out a long breath. Turning 2,000 yuan into 512 dollars—about 3,600+ yuan in total. Not exactly getting rich overnight, but it was the first time he’d made money on a shitcoin.

Someone in the group had just posted a message saying that at 0.081, he went all-in and used leverage to long MUBARAK, with a target of 1 dollar.

Awie shook his head and set the phone aside.

He knew this story wouldn’t be long before someone else wrote another version. And in that version, the protagonist probably wouldn’t be as lucky as he was.

In the crypto world, the people who know when to sell always live longer than the people who only know how to buy.
