Tom Siegel, the former vice president of trust and safety at Google, urged the AI industry to slow development and said it is repeating the mistakes of the social media era. According to Sina Finance, Siegel said the industry is in a very bad position when it comes to AI's impact on children and that it is unrealistic to think it can solve the problem without outside help.

Siegel announced on Tuesday that he is joining Common Sense Media, a nonprofit focused on children's online issues. According to Sina Finance, he will serve as the first executive director of the Youth AI Safety Institute, which Common Sense Media launched in May to study children's use of AI.

Anthropic and the OpenAI Foundation are supporting the institute. According to Sina Finance, Siegel said he plans to set standards to hold AI companies accountable and work with those companies and third-party organizations to do so. He said the risks range from suicide and psychosis to cognitive offloading, which he described as a decline in critical thinking caused by relying on AI for answers.
