Robinhood continues to place its bets on crypto-related contracts.
CEO Vlad Tenev said that these types of contracts have already exceeded expectations in terms of their share in Robinhood’s prediction markets business, and that sports contracts will become a minority in the coming years. Revenue from company event contracts rose more than 10-fold year over year to $156 million in Q2. In August, contract volumes reached about 4.7 billion trades, roughly 15 times the figure from the same period last year.
The market may interpret this as generally positive for HOOD and the prediction markets space; but the real divergence lies in regulation. Sports contracts face state oversight and gambling-related controversy, while crypto prices, policies, and on-chain events are more easily structured as compliant trading categories. If trading volumes continue to expand and the contract categories keep growing, the inflow of capital could become stronger; if the regulatory boundaries tighten, this line of business will also become more sensitive.
